‘Tango Mòrbido Y Cìnico’ won the first prize at the composition competition ‘Scrivere in Jazz’ 2008 in Sardegna, Italy.
The Tango is part IV of a trombone concerto called ‘Frutas Maduras’ which I composed in 2002.
The concerto consists of six movements and has a total duration of 50 minutes.
The Finnish jazz orchestra UMO performed and recorded ‘Frutas Maduras’ for the Finnish Broadcast corporation YLE in 2003 with the great Antti Rissanen as soloist and Kari Heinilä conducting.
The Tango is one of my favourite pieces which is why I arranged it also for settings other than big band.
The piece has been part of the Platypus Ensemble’s concert repertoire for many years. In this quartet version it features on two Platypus’ recordings: Gestalt (2003) and the live recording Life@Play (2007).
For the Platypus Ensemble/Proton String Quartet co-operation during 2008 I made yet another version which unfortunately hasn’t been recorded.
